Pigments are substances added to cosmetic products to give them color using the principle of absorbing or reflecting visible light. They are commonly found in eye shadows, foundations, and lipsticks. Pigments, also known as colorants, are the main component of make-up cosmetics. The solubilization or dispersion of pigments colors the cosmetic base and other raw materials, and is the raw material that gives cosmetics their color. Due to the safe and non-toxic nature of natural pigments, they are taking up an increasing share of the cosmetic industry. The choice of cosmetic pigments is generally based on the suitability of the product and the characteristics of the pigment itself, with the following four main points.
The amount of pigment added to a cosmetic product needs to be determined in conjunction with the properties of the cosmetic product used, in addition to the dosage. Cosmetics will be in contact with the skin for a long time, so safety needs to be considered and the added pigment should have no side effects on the skin. Some pigments are prone to skin allergies or photosensitivity when used on the skin, and therefore need to be replaced with other pigments.
Cosmetics can be divided into multiple categories such as beauty, hair, and pharmaceutical. Each type of makeup is configured from a variety of ingredients. Therefore, it is necessary to consider that the color added will not interact with other ingredients and will not affect the efficacy of other ingredients and thus the final effect of the cosmetic.
Color stability is closely related to product quality. After exposure to UV light, pigments may change color or fade through photo-oxidation or photo-reduction. Therefore, for different products, choosing suitable pigments with good color fastness is necessary.
Pigments used in cosmetics have high requirements for purity, especially in cosmetics that produce allergic reactions. Some experiments have shown that the higher the purity of some pigments, the less allergenic the products produced. In addition, cosmetics come in a variety of forms such as creams, pastes, and powders, each of which requires a uniform distribution of pigments. Therefore, the solubility and dispersion of the pigments used in different cosmetic forms, as well as storage stability, need to be considered.
